Preparing for Ostara — Welcoming Spring & New Beginnings

Even before the equinox arrives, you can feel the subtle stirrings of spring. The days are slowly growing longer, the air carries the faint hint of new life, and the quiet magic of Ostara whispers that it’s time to prepare for growth, renewal, and fresh beginnings.

What is Ostara?

Ostara, the Spring Equinox, is a sacred moment when day and night are perfectly balanced. It’s a celebration of new life, fertility, and the awakening of the natural world. Traditionally, it marks the turning point from the introspection of winter toward the energy of spring. For modern witches, it’s a perfect opportunity to set intentions, create rituals, and invite gentle, seasonal magic into our daily lives.

Ostara has been linked to the Germanic goddess Eostre who is associated with dawn, fertility and the renewal of life. A beautiful symbol of the changing of seasons, a time where there are many new opportunities blooming all around us. She is often depicted with symbols like eggs, rabbits and often flowers (due to Spring being on its way).

Ostara Correspondences

  • Colors: Pastels, yellow, green
  • Herbs: Rosemary, thyme, chamomile, mint
  • Crystals: Moonstone, rose quartz, citrine
  • Symbols: Eggs, rabbits, flowers, seeds

People often celebrate Ostara with tending to gardens (or if you live somewhere a tiny bit colder it may be the time you are planting your seeds for your garden), and setting intentions for their own personal growth.

Ways to Prepare Your Home and Spirit

Preparing for Ostara doesn’t need to be complicated. Even small, mindful actions can invite the season’s energy into your life:

  • Light a candle: Choose a soft yellow, green, or pastel candle and focus on intentions for new beginnings, balance, or personal growth.
  • Plant seeds: Start a small indoor herb garden, sprout seeds on a windowsill, or symbolically “plant” intentions in a notebook or jar.
  • Create a seasonal altar: Gather flowers, twigs, stones, or other natural elements to honor the coming season.
  • Journaling and reflection: Take a quiet moment to reflect on what you’d like to nurture in your life over the coming months.
  • Enjoy sensory rituals: Brew a fragrant herbal tea, light incense, or take a mindful walk outside to notice the first hints of spring.

Mini Ostara Ritual

Light a pastel-colored candle and focus on an intention you’d like to grow this spring; whether it’s personal growth, a creative project, or a new habit. You can even write it down on a small piece of paper and keep it near your candle or place it in a jar to “plant” your intention.

Setting Intentions for Spring

Ostara energy is perfect for planting the seeds of your goals, literally or metaphorically. Consider what you want to grow in your life: new habits, creative projects, healing, or joy. Even a few small actions can create a ripple of change as the season unfolds.
